Abstract: By breaking down the critical issues existent in the land use for small and medium-size cities in China, fully recognizing the new rules laid down on urban land use in the new era of urban land planning, and referring to foreign advanced urban development strategies, this paper tackles the improvement of land use planning on the aspects of urban development boundaries, blue and green space regulation, traffic network planning, mixed use of space, etc., explores the approach of intensive and compact land use based on ‘green’ development notions and sheds lights on land use planning for small and medium-size cities.
